Gavin Henson to return for Wales

Gavin Henson is to return to the Welsh fold for the non-test match against the Barbarians on the 4th of June, in the Millennium Stadium. If selected for the match, it will be Henson's first appearance for Wales since the final Six Nations match, against Ireland in 2009. That match ended in disappointment for Henson and Wales, with Henson taking an 18 month 'break' from rugby afterwards.

Since then Henson has took part in various television series on what seemed to be a personal quest for fame and appreciation. His rugby comeback has also being filled with controversy, snubbing the Welsh regions to join Saracens, Henson still had eyes for international rugby, stating, "I know I still have so much to give to rugby and I can't wait to get back on the field, playing for Saracens and hopefully for Wales,". His stay at Saracens wasn't a happy one, struggling with weight and injury problems his game time was restricted, missing Wales Six Nations campaign at the same time. As his Welsh colleagues were performing on Europe's biggest rugby stage Henson was busy changing clubs again after he was released by Saracens after only 4 games for the club.

He signed for Toulon the same week in what seemed like a club that was more suited to Henson's personality, with the French club being owned by millionaire businessman renowned for trying to bring the biggest rugby stars to the club. Showing early promise at the club, he looked like a player who was rediscovering some of the form that helped Wales to two Grand Slams in '05 and '08. Once again he showed himself to be very difficult to manage, resulting in him being finally suspended by Toulon, with the club stating; “respect the code of good behaviour defined by the club.” With signs like Henson would have to look for a third club in one season, the French club gave him a reprieve allowing him to return to action.

Not only did the French clubs actions save his club future but they may also have resulted in Wales coach Warren Gatland giving Henson one more chance as well. Gatland has however always been a keen admirer of Henson a may have called him up to the squad not matter what happened in the South of France. No doubt a fully fit and dedicated Henson would greatly add to a Welsh midfield that has been all brawn and very little class since his absence but it's a big risk as his presence in the camp could cause fractions which is especially unwanted in a World Cup Year. Even as a rugby player Henson has caused division not least among the Welsh supporters. Certainly older generations can't come to terms with a male rugby player 'tanning up' before taking the field and courting publicity. They would prefer in many ways that he would just get on with the game and then would come to idolise the centre's vision and distribution as much as the younger generations do.

This latest twist in the Gavin Henson story (surely to be a movie someday), allows the troubled star yet another chance to redeem himself to the onlooking rugby World. It also allows a once promising young centre to finally fulfil his potential at the age of 29. This is certainly not the final twist in the story.
